Location: On-Site β Vista, California
Department: Product Management
Reports To: VP of Marketing and Product Management
Position Summary
Tempo Communications is seeking a technically savvy, entrepreneurial Jr. Product Manager to take a hands-on role in shaping the future of our fiber optic product portfolio. This is a growth-oriented position for someone who has spent time in the field installing, testing, and maintaining fiber and is ready to transition into product management.
You will own key aspects of assigned product lines, from gathering customer insights to defining requirements, influencing roadmaps, and supporting launches. This is not a back-office support role β you will work directly with customers, engineering, and leadership to deliver solutions that solve real-world problems for fiber technicians and network operators.
We are looking for someone ambitious, analytical, and eager to learn the business skills of product management on the job β including market analysis, financial modeling, and business case creation β while bringing deep credibility from hands-on field experience.
Key Responsibilities
- Own and manage assigned fiber product lines, including OTDRs, loss test kits, splicers, and other fiber tools, under guidance of senior leadership
- Gather and prioritize customer requirements through direct field visits, industry events, and technical conversations, using systems thinking and customer empathy
- Develop product roadmap inputs based on customer feedback, competitive analysis, and market trends
- Translate field insights into detailed product requirements and partner with engineering to bring solutions to market
- Contribute to business cases and financial models that justify product investments, learning key PM skills in the process
- Collaborate with marketing to create collateral, training, and sales enablement materials that accelerate adoption
- Provide technical product support for sales and customer-facing teams, leveraging your hands-on experience and troubleshooting skills
- Champion customer perspective internally and advocate for product improvements that deliver measurable value
Required Qualifications
- 3+ years of hands-on field experience in fiber installation, maintenance, or technical support, with exposure to live network environments
- 3+ years using and maintaining fiber optic tools and instruments, such as fusion splicers, optical power meters, light sources, OTDRs, fiber identifiers, and inspection scopes
- Experience with fiber network implementations across multiple use cases (FTTH, MSOs, enterprise, utility, industrial, defense)
- Strong working knowledge of fiber technology fundamentals: fiber types, connector standards, loss budgets, splicing techniques, and test methodologies
- Familiarity with fiber route identification tools and markers, network labeling standards, and best practices for field documentation
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills; able to explain technical concepts clearly
- Demonstrated initiative, resourcefulness, and structured problem-solving ability
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint); familiarity with CRM or PLM tools is a plus
- Curiosity, ambition, and a growth mindset β with willingness to learn financial analysis, business case development, and formal product management processes on the job
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelorβs degree in engineering, Telecommunications, Optical Networking, or a related technical field (or equivalent hands-on experience)
- Experience working at or with fiber test and measurement equipment manufacturers or distributors
- Exposure to product lifecycle management, technical marketing, or go-to-market strategy
- Familiarity with industry standards and organizations (TIA, IEEE, SCTE, BICSI, ITU)
- Awareness of emerging fiber trends such as coherent optics, PON evolution, OTDR trace analysis, and fiber characterization
Who Should Apply
You should apply if you are:
- A fiber technician, splicer, or field engineer with tool expertise and troubleshooting skills, ready to move into a role where you influence the products youβve been using
- A technical trainer, applications engineer, or field support specialist who loves helping others understand fiber technology and wants to drive product design
- Someone who demonstrates curiosity, ambition, and initiative, and is motivated by solving practical customer problems
- A collaborative problem-solver who thrives on working with cross-functional teams and turning real-world issues into actionable solutions
- Eager to grow into a product management leader by learning business strategy, financial analysis, and market positioning skills
