Job Title
NPI Product Manager, ICP-OES (HYBRID - Shelton, CT)
Location(s)
Shelton
Job Description
Purpose
PerkinElmer is seeking an NPI Product Manager to serve as the dedicated commercial lead across the ICP-OES product line's active New Product Introduction programs, prioritized by the Strategic Product Director. This is a purpose-built role with one clear mandate: ensure that new analytical instruments arrive in market fully commercially ready โ with the pricing, positioning, training, launch plan, and commercial tools that allow each to ramp revenue quickly and establish a durable market position.
The NPI PM owns commercial readiness from development program initiation through post-launch ramp. They work in close partnership with R&D, Applications Science, Marketing, and the field commercial organization โ but they are not embedded in R&D. Their job is to represent the market and the customer in every program decision: challenging technical choices that create commercial risk, driving VOC to sharpen positioning, and ensuring the launch plan reflects what is actually needed to win โ not just what is convenient to deliver.
This role requires deep program discipline, commercial instinct, and the interpersonal credibility to lead cross-functional teams without formal authority. The NPI PM must be comfortable operating in ambiguity, making evidence-based decisions under time pressure, and holding a high bar for commercial readiness even when program timelines create pressure to compromise.
Location: Hybrid remote out of our Shelton, CT office with 1-2 days being available to work remotely, depending on the needs of the business.
ย
Responsibilities
ย
Commercial Readiness Ownership
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย Own the commercial readiness workstream for each assigned NPI program โ defining what 'launch-ready' means commercially and driving the organization to achieve it
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย Develop and maintain the NPI commercial launch plan: pricing strategy, target customer profiles, positioning framework, competitive differentiation, channel and regional launch sequencing, and sales readiness milestones
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย Set and own launch pricing โ building the pricing model from market research, customer willingness-to-pay data, competitive benchmarking, and lifecycle revenue objectives; developed in partnership with the Strategic Product Director and approved by the VP of Atomic Spectroscopy
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย Define and track commercial readiness gate criteria for each NPI stage gate โ ensuring commercial preparation keeps pace with technical development and that the launch team never arrives at gate approval without a complete commercial plan
Market Requirements & Product Definition
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย Own the Market Requirements Document (MRD) for each assigned NPI โ working with the Strategic Segment Manager and conducting independent VOC to ensure requirements are grounded in customer evidence, not internal assumption
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย Translate MRD requirements into a clear Product Requirements Document (PRD) that R&D can act on โ making explicit priority trade-offs between must-have and nice-to-have requirements
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย Serve as the primary commercial interface to the R&D program team โ attending technical reviews, raising commercial risk flags early, and negotiating feature/schedule trade-offs with the VP Product Line's backing
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย Monitor competitive landscape throughout the program โ tracking competitive instrument releases, pricing moves, and application developments that affect the NPI's positioning assumptions
Voice of Customer & Validation
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย Design and lead the NPI VOC program โ a minimum of 30 in-depth customer interviews per year during active development, structured around requirements validation, concept testing, and pricing research
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย Manage beta customer relationships from site selection through beta completion โ ensuring beta programs generate evidence-based feedback, not goodwill gestures
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย Translate VOC findings into actionable program recommendations: feature priority changes, pricing adjustments, positioning refinements, or competitive response requirements
Launch Execution & Field Readiness
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย Own the commercial launch plan โ coordinating across Applications Science, MarComm, Regional Marketing, Sales, and Service to ensure every function is launch-ready on day one
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย Develop the commercial launch toolkit: product brief, competitive battlecard, value proposition messaging, demo guide, and objection-handling resource for the field commercial team
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย Deliver product and application training to the sales and service organisation pre-launch โ ensuring commercial teams can demonstrate, position, and close against competitive alternatives
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย Monitor post-launch commercial KPIs during the ramp period โ order intake, revenue, competitive win rate, and pricing realisation โ and lead corrective action where ramp performance lags plan
Program Collaboration
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย Attend and actively contribute to NPI program reviews, stage-gate meetings, and executive steering committee briefings โ representing the commercial perspective at every program milestone
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย Partner with the Applications Scientists to develop the application note and proof-of-performance content roadmap that supports the NPI launch and early ramp
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย Handoff the NPI to the Strategic Product Director and Operations PM at commercial launch โ providing full product, pricing, and market documentation, and supporting a clean transition of ongoing portfolio management responsibility
ย
Success Metrics
ย
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย Commercial launch plan completeness at each stage gate (vs. defined readiness criteria)
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย Post-launch revenue ramp vs. AOP plan โ 3-month, 6-month, and 12-month actuals
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย VOC program coverage โ minimum 30 documented customer conversations per active program year
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย Pricing realization โ average selling price vs. list price in the launch period
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย Sales organization launch readiness score (training completion, demo capability certification)
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย Competitive win rate in the first 12 months post-launch
ย
Qualifications & Experience
ย
Required
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย 8+ years of experience in product management, technical product marketing, or program management within analytical instrumentation, life sciences tools, or scientific capital equipment
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย Demonstrated experience leading a major NPI through full commercial launch โ from market requirements definition through post-launch ramp, with clear personal ownership of commercial readiness deliverables
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย Deep working knowledge of at least one analytical technique relevant to PerkinElmer's portfolio (spectroscopy, chromatography, mass spectrometry, materials characterization) sufficient to engage credibly with R&D teams and customers in technical program discussions
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย Experience conducting structured VOC programs โ customer interviewing, concept testing, willingness-to-pay research โ and translating findings into product and positioning decisions
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย Strong financial acumen: experience building NPI business cases, pricing models, and revenue ramp forecasts
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย Proven ability to lead cross-functional program teams without direct authority โ influencing R&D, Applications, MarComm, and regional commercial functions through credibility and program structure
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย Ability to travel 25โ35% for customer visits, beta site management, conferences, and internal program reviews
Preferred
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย MSc or PhD in a relevant scientific discipline โ providing peer-level credibility with R&D teams and scientifically trained customers
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย Experience in a structured stage-gate NPI process within a product management organization
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย Familiarity with PerkinElmer's Atomic Spectroscopy portfolio and customer workflows
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย Track record of competitive win in a head-to-head NPI situation โ launching a product that displaced an established competitive platform
ย
